The Communication Networks Division of the CTTC is looking for candidates interested in a research position in its Mobile Networks Department.

1. Requirements

General requirements:
PhD in telecommunications, computer science, electrical engineering, or related field.
A good publication record is fundamental.
Strong analytical and technical skills with focus on quality
Good programming skills
Capacity of carrying out innovative research as well as proven experience in research. Practical experience and work experience in international and national R&D projects carried out in the context of R&D departments or institutions is highly appreciated
Ability to work autonomously with complex research issues (project management experience is a plus) and create IPR
Good analysis, problem solving, organizational and multi-tasking skills.
Fluent English, both written and spoken
Strong communication and presentation skills
Ability to adapt to and work in international teams

Specific requirements:
We are requesting candidates to have experience on two or more of the following topics:
Experience on software development for experimental research
Experimental wireless networking research (incl. protocol and networking stack development)
Wireless network modeling, design, architecture, planning and/or traffic engineering
Software-defined networks and network virtualization
Network functions virtualization
Cloud computing
Network and service orchestration
Mobile network architecture
Self-organized networking (incl. machine learning applied to mobile networks)
Big Data
Energy efficient networks


2. Generic description of the position

Functions and activities: participation in research projects with both competitive and industrial funds, elaboration of project proposals, publication in relevant conferences and journals in the research field, supervision of master/PhD students and collaboration with partner universities, contribution to technology transfer activities.

Duration: The position may become permanent after two years depending on the research and project outcomes of the selected candidate. The salary will be determined according to qualifications, work experience and budget availability.

3. About CTTC – www.cttc.cat

The CTTC is an advanced research center on Information Technologies, Communications and Geomatics, based in Castelldefels (Barcelona). Current research divisions include Communication Networks, Communication Systems, Communication Technologies and Geomatics.

CTTC staff is multidisciplinary and international and has a strong record of participation in European, national and industrial projects. The CTTC is based in the Mediterranean Park of Technology in Castelldefels (Spain), at only 30 minutes, by public transport, from Barcelona city centre. The Park provides excellent conditions for conducting focused research and additional facilities like a Campus Residency for workers and students.


4. About the Mobile Networks department of the Communication Networks Division – http://networks.cttc.es/mobile-networks/

The Mobile Networks Department has three main research lines revolving around the optimization of IT+network resources of mobile/wireless transport and access networks and their potential exploitation by verticals (e.g., smart grids, smart cities). The Elastic Mobile Networks line focuses on software-defined networking and network functions virtualization in mobile networks towards efficient network resource consumption. The Big Data and Self-Organization for Mobile Networks line focuses on network-wide optimization and automated decision-making in complex networking environments based on learning from past measurements. Finally, the Sustainable Mobile Networks line focuses on designing energy-efficient mobile networks, potentially including harvested energy towards nearly-zero energy networks.
