The PhD candidate will participate on the project ACERCOM, a Spanish project Retos Colaboración 2016, between IMDEA Materials Institute, Arcelor Mittal and the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), in the field of the development of new hybrid materials with steel and fiber composites to be applied in off-shore wind mill towers and naval construction.

The project is aimed to work with fiber metal laminates FML's to increase the fatigue life, response under impact and dynamic loads, damage tolerance, manufacturing costs, etc. as compared with the current steel construction.

Requirements: Candidates should hold a MEng in Mechanical Engineering or Materials (or related discipline) with excellent academic credentials and a strong commitment to develop an academic career in an international and multidisciplinary environment.

Strong background on solid mechanics and previous experience in finite element modeling will be valuable.

Fluent English (oral and written) is mandatory. IMDEA Materials actively supports flexible working conditions. Applications by women are particularly welcome.
