Experienced Researcher working in the field of neuroscience to apply for a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship position to be part of "The Synaptic Metabolism Laboratory" at Fundació Sant Joan de Déu, Barcelona.
The main motivation of our research is to link different study levels: basic neuroscience, neurometabolism and clinical approach in paediatric neurology through the study of synaptic communication in children. The synapse is the physical and chemical communication space between cerebral cells. Synaptic connections provide the basis for communication through neurotransmitters, trophic factors and signalling mechanisms. Rare inherited monogenic disorders or the interaction of genetic and environmental factors in prevalent neuropaediatric disorders can alter these biological processes. Disruption in synaptic function during childhood and adolescence can produce symptoms such as severe motor disorders (as infantile parkinsonism), early-onset epilepsy or neuropsychiatric conditions.
Description:
Job responsibilities include leading and optimizing a research synaptic network set up in Barcelona (www.connectingthegrowingbrain.com). The principal coordinator of this network is the Synaptic Metabolism Laboratory (Fundació Sant Joan de Déu, Neurology Department Hospital Sant Joan de Déu) (www.agarciacazorla.wordpress.com). Diverse research groups that belong to different institutions participate in this multi-level integration network in neuropaediatric disorders. The main objective of the study is to describe synaptic communication pathways in seemingly unrelated disease groups which share anomalous neurotransmission mechanisms. These groups include rare monogenic disorders of small molecules that alter neurotransmission, as examples IEM of biogenic amines and GABA, and early epileptic encephalopathies due to genetic mutations that disrupt synaptic function, and common neuropaediatric conditions (neuropsychiatric diseases of children such as ADHD, intellectual disabi
lity, autism and epilepsy). Synaptic dysfunction would be characterised at the molecular, biochemical (both proteomic and metabolic level), cellular and animal models, and brain connectivity levels. Every group within the network is responsible of specific studies.
Specific tasks of the candidate include developing tools to detect multiple biomarkers of synaptic dysfunction in human samples, cell and animal models. The candidate should be experienced in molecular biology, proteomics and in vitro cell models. Strong working team abilities are required since coordination of different tasks between researchers that belong to the synaptic network is one of the first aims of the project.
Annual Salary: Around 65.000 Euros
