DESCRIPTION

The Modeling and Simulation of Materials Processing group at IMDEA Materials Institute (Madrid, Spain) is looking for a Research Assistant (MSc Degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Computational Physics, Mechanical Engineering) to carry out a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering.

The candidate will work on multiscale modeling of microstructure growth during solidification processing.

The candidate will develop and implement computational codes to model dendritic crystal growth, primarily based on the newly introduced dendritic needle network (DNN) multiscale approach, but also implementing and performing phase field simulations. The research will also involve the exploration of coupling pathways to modeling tools at other length and time scales (such as molecular dynamics and continuum approaches). While the position will be mostly computational, active collaborations with experimentalists and industrial partners is expected.

Scientific challenges to be tackled pertain to the selection of dendritic microstructures during the solidification of alloys (such as in casting, welding, or additive manufacturing processes). These microstructures strongly affect the final properties of technological parts, and thus they occupy a central role in developing innovative alloys and processing routes for next generations of enhanced performance structural materials.

REQUIREMENTS

The candidate should hold a MSc degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Computational Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy (or a related discipline). Excellent academic credentials and a strong commitment to develop an academic career in an international and multidisciplinary environment are expected.

Candidates with strong background knowledge in numerical simulation of materials (computational thermomechanics and thermodynamics, finite elements, phase field) and experience in scientific programming (C, C++, Fortran, etc.) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Fully proficient command of the English language, oral and written, is required (English is the official language of the group and of the Institute).

Free Spanish lessons are provided on a voluntary basis.

Interested candidates should submit their Curriculum Vitae (including contact information for two academic references) and a short statement of their motivation and scientific interests.

CONDITIONS

Starting date: Available immediately; open until filled.
Full time contract including social security coverage.
