- Commission launches consultation on "Europe 2020 Project Bonds" to fund infrastructure

(28 February 2011) The European Commission today launches a public consultation on the "Europe 2020 Project Bond Initiative" which aims at boosting the funding of projects with long-term revenue potential in line with the Europe 2020 policy priorities. This follows the announcement made by President Jose Manuel Barroso in his State of the Union Address. Its objective is to help the private project companies to attract capital market funding from investors such as pension funds and insurance companies. The Europe 2020 Project Bond initiative has been identified in the Annual Growth Survey as a priority measure to enhance growth.

(24 February 2011) Today, European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes is meeting with 300 leaders of the European Photonics sector at the annual Photonics21 General Assembly, which is organised by the Photonics21 European Technology Platform in close collaboration with the European Commission. Vice-President Kroes will discuss with the photonics industry how they can play a stronger role in the EU research and innovation programmes to stimulate more growth and jobs in Europe. Photonics is one of the key enabling ICT technologies that can give all Europeans faster internet access, better health care and energy efficient lighting. Stepping up ICT research and innovation, a key objective of the Digital Agenda for Europe, will help increase Europe's productivity and growth, improve the quality of life and overcome social challenges.

- More EU citizens benefitting from online public services

(21 February 2011) More people across the EU now have access to public services online, according to Europe's 9th e-Government Benchmark Report released today. The average availability of online public services in the EU went up from 69% to 82% from 2009 to 2010. Putting more Government services online helps cut costs for public administrations and also reduces red tape for businesses and citizens. The report reveals the best and worst performers in the EU, focusing on two essential public services: 'finding a job' and 'starting a company'.

The kick-off meeting of the Interest Group on Shared Services (IGSS) will gather interested parties from local, regional and national administrations to discuss the potentialities for developing shared services across government levels. Local and regional intiatives will be presented. This meeting aims to support the development of a partnership between relevant actors involved in public administration management. - "Accessibility Reaching Everywhere": the final workshop and international conference of the AEGIS project

The event will bring together both end-users (people with disabilities) as well as platform and application accessibility developers, representative organisations, the Assistive Technology industry, and policy makers. Since 2008, the consortium of the FP7 AEGIS project has been developing an Open Accessibility Framework - comprising open accessibility interfaces, user interface components, developer tools, end-user applications and prototype accessibility solutions for desktops, rich Internet applications and mobile devices. The workshop on 28 November will focus on the realisations of the AEGIS project and provide attendees the opportunity to try out all outcomes of the project. The conference on 29-30 November will gather a wide array of experts and users in the area of Assistive Technology to discuss scientific and policy developments in accessible technology; showcase relevant projects and initiatives in the area of assistive technology. Registration is now open and a call for papers for the conference has been launched.

Europe consumes too much energy, and 30 % of this energy goes to households. Data indicate that 16 % of this energy used in households is wasted and this household consumption is projected to increase over the next years. This trend will not be stopped with new energy efficient products as we'll have more and more electronic equipment at home. Scientists are searching for solutions and this video presents some of the projects in this area.

The eHealth Strategies study analyses policy development and planning, implementation measures as well as progress achieved with respect to national and regional eHealth solutions in EU and EEA Member States, with emphasis on barriers and enablers beyond technology. The focus is on infrastructure elements and selected solutions emphasised in the European eHealth Action Plan of 2004.
