One FPI PREDOCTORAL fellowship/contract is available in Dr. Alfonso Martínez de la Cruz´s laboratory at CIC bioGUNE, Bilbao (Spain), under project BFU2013-47531-R, "STRUCTURAL BASIS OF REGULATION OF HUMAN CYSTATHIONINE BETA-SYNTHASE, THE CENTRAL ENZYME OF TRANSSULFURATION".

Cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) controls the flux of sulfur from methionine to cysteine, which is a precursor of glutathione, taurine and hydrogen sulfide. Hereditary CBS-deficiency causes homocystinuria (CBSDH), the most common inherited defect in sulfur amino acid metabolism characterized by severely elevated plasma levels of the toxic intermediate homocysteine. The worldwide frequency ranges from 1:1,800 to 1:900,000, thus classifying CBSDH as a rare disease (OMIM 236200). CBSDH manifests clinically with connective tissue symptoms such as dislocated lenses and skeletal abnormalities, mental retardation, and thromboembolic episodes. The CBS protein levels and enzyme activity are increased in persons with Down Syndrome and elevated homocysteine levels are considered a risk factor for Alzheimer's dementia and cancer.

CIC bioGUNE is equipped with a state-of-the-art facility to conduct protein crystallography and functional studies including a home X-ray source, automated crystallization screening devices, a crystal farm and other setups such as CD, SPR, fluorescence spectrometer or ITC.

The position is conditional on the applicant being the recipient of the FPI program from MINECO in its call 2014.
