HOST INSTITUTION
The Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO, Barcelona) is a public center working exclusively in the field of cancer. Its approach to the disease is comprehensive, combining, all in one organization, prevention, care, specialized training and research. At present the ICO has four centers that work jointly with four university hospitals. It has its own territorial model and it is a multi-centric organization working in a coordinated way with 18 hospitals of the territory. Currently, ICO is an oncology referral center for 40% of the adult population of Catalonia. Research features as part of the primordial objective of the ICO, as stated in its founding Articles of Association.
ICO was founded in 1996 and it has become a center of reference in Catalonia, both in healthcare quality (satisfaction survey results and award for Best Clinical Practices from the National Health System, among others) and in research (top Spanish hospital-institute in terms of scientific quality). ICO has a strong track record of cooperation with other academic groups, with private companies and with public administration at international level, with partners in Europe and the Americas.
ICO carries out research in all areas of cancer, from understanding why it develops and how to prevent it, to finding early diagnosis strategies or new, more efficient treatments, as well as research related to caring for end-of-life patients. It also carries out research in nursing, psycho-oncology and social work.
Successful candidates will have the opportunity to initiate and conduct high-quality research within the newly created research program ProCURE (Program Against Cancer Therapeutic Resistance) at the ICO. ProCURE involves strong clinical interactions and multidisciplinary approaches.
